F-692 Cheb

The first mention of Cheb dates back to 1061. Craftsmen and businessmen especially prospered in the town during the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, it passed into the hands of the House of Hohenstaufen, specifically those of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, who transformed Cheb into a bulwark for his politics and built a magnificent imperial palatine castle (Cheb Castle) there. During the 30 Years War, Cheb was an advantageous operating base for both sides and it became the site of the murder of Albrecht von Wallenstein. Visitors are now attracted by the exhibition depicting this event or by the area known as “Špalíček”, which is a block of eleven historical houses.
