F-439 Žleby

A municipality in the valley of the Doubrava River, where a deep channel was created (in Czech: žlab), from which it received its name. Henry of Lichtenburg established a castle there in the 13th century, but it was subsequently held by a large number of owners. Žleby was raised to the status of a township in 1356, when it was the property of Emperor Charles IV. The Žleby Estate consisted of 20 villages until 1848. The originally gothic castle, demolished by the Hussites, was rebuilt pre-1450 and then renovated a number of times. Vincenc Karel Auersperg was instrumental in the castle’s last neo-gothic renovation and the overall development of Žleby.
