A unique rock formation of volcanic origin with a monumental silhouette, a symbol of the Bohemian Paradise and a natural rarity. The castle was established by Čeněk of Vartemberk at the end of the 14th century. The castle was fully functional in the mid-15th century and it became a fortress which was never conquered militarily. However, its fame definitively ended after the mid-16th century. The towers known as the Maid (57 m above the lower courtyard) and the Hag (47 m above the lower courtyard) and the unexplored passages beneath them attracted adventurers, poets, painters and romantics who saw the castle as the eighth wonder of the world.
