F-308 Sněžka

The highest peak between the Alps and Scandinavia, the Arctic island in the middle of Europe, first called Pahrbek Sněžný or Sněžovka. Its current name has been used since 1823. The slopes of Sněžka were formed by a glacier on three sides, which created a shape that is unique in the Central European mountains. The first documented ascent is from 1456, when a certain Venetian searched for gold and precious stones in the mountains. In 1569 Jiřík of Řásně measured the height of Sněžka at an unbelievable 2035 m a.s.l. In 1786, botanist T. Haenke discovered a new type of grass on Sněžka - lipnice plihá (Poa laxa)
