F-476 Pec pod Sněžkou

The earliest settled part of today’s Pec pod Sněžkou was the mining settlement of Obří důl. The earliest precise record of mining dates from 1511. Mineral mining continued in Pec with various interruptions until 1959, when mining activities ended after more than 450 years. Pec itself was established at the end of the 16th century, at that time as the third part of Velká Úpa. It owes its existence to the extensive forestry activities undertaken for the purposes of the Kutná Hora mines. The development of hiking in the 2nd half of the 19th century gave the settlers new ways to make a living. They adapted their houses to enable them to let out rooms and this led to the establishment of chalets, guesthouses and hotels.
