F-778 Olomouc Astronomical Clock

The first written mention of the astronomical clock dates from 1519. Its earliest known appearance reflected the medieval concept of the layout of the universe. After the 30 Years War, it was repaired and enhanced to include paintings with the motif of the septem artes liberales. It included, for example, a carillon, statues of the goddess Luna, Saint Wenceslas, Saint George, the Madonna and child and the Three Kings. The last significant repair to the astronomical clock took place in 1746–47. However, the mechanism stood still for almost the entire 19th century. Another significant change took place in the mid-20th century in the spirit of socialist realism.
