F-544 Jablonec synagogue

The tabernacle of the Jewish community once adorned the intersection of Luční and Goetheho Streets (now Luční, Jiráskova and U Muzea Streets). The building in the Moorish style comprised one of the dominant features among the predominantly timbered houses. The official consecration took place on 28th September 1892. Less than 50 years later, however, the building disappeared in flames during the “Night of Broken Glass”. According to press reports, the synagogue was plundered on 10th November 1938 and then set ablaze at around 5 pm. A symbolic memorial was unveiled on the site of the burnt synagogue on 2nd September 1993. The author was the sculptor Oldřich Plíva.
