F-483 Hukvaldy Castle

One of the largest castles in Moravia was established prior to 1285 by Henry of Příbor and Hukvaldy. The castle was built gradually over the course of five centuries from the end of the 13th century through to the mid-18th century, when its inaccessible location and the degree of comfort in the castle premises caused it to be abandoned and to gradually become a ruin. The castle’s main function was to protect the trade route connecting Olomouc and Krakow in Poland via Hranice, Nový Jičín, Místek, Frýdek and Těšín. Hukvaldy also played a significant role as the estate's administrative, political and military centre.
