(*18.2.1838 - †19.2.1916) Celebrated physicist and philosopher, suggested for a Nobel Prize on multiple occasions. His thought-processes were very original and he was active in a remarkably wide range of areas. His work also inspired Albert Einstein. He gave his name to a number of physical quantities and terms. Probably the best-known of them is the so-called Mach number (Ma), which is mainly used to measure the supersonic speed of aircraft
