F-710 Vyšehrad

The first reliable documents of the existence of the fortress date from the mid-10th century, when dinars of Prince Boleslav II were minted there. During the reign of Wenceslas II, Vyšehrad became a royal seat and it became home to a chapter which was directly subordinate to the Pope. It underwent a further period of prosperity under Charles IV. However, the promising development was halted by the Hussites, who pillaged the site. The Town of Mount Vyšehrad (Město hory Vyšehrad) was established after 1450, but it did not last long. From the mid-17th century, Vyšehrad was transformed into a baroque fortress with a system of casemates and it became a national symbol from the 2nd half of the 19th century onwards.
