Křivoklát is one of the oldest and most significant Czech royal castles. Its beginnings stretch back to the 12th century, during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II. Charles IV also frequently stayed at the royal castle. Křivoklát was substantially reconstructed by Wenceslas IV and later it was magnificently extended by Vladislav Jagiellonian. It has been extensively damaged by fire a number of times. The Czech crown jewels were stored at the castle during the Hussite Wars. The last owners were the Lords of Fürstenberg, who rescued Křivoklát by means of extensive restoration.
