The written history of this thermal town started in 1370, when Charles IV gave the existing settlement its freedom and rights. It underwent its greatest construction and development as a spa 200 years later. For a long time, this was not even halted by the 30 Years War or the natural disasters of the 17th century. A number of spa houses and colonnades were erected in the town. The town was visited by personalities such as the poet Goethe or the Russian Czar Peter the Great. The boom of the most famous spa town in Europe at that time was eventually halted by the World Wars and the communist regime. This popular tourist destination’s new chapter began to be written after 1989.
